Sydney Stephenson, MSPC

Offers Animal Assisted Play Therapy®

Drum Circle Facilitator

Pre-licensed Professional Counselor

“When a flower doesn’t bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower,” Alexander den Heijer. Many factors can bring people to seek therapy, so Sydney helps clients understand the different influences that have led to their concerns. This is important in order for therapy to be truly nonjudgmental. As the Sanctuary model says, asking, "What has happened to you?" not, "What is wrong with you?" is the first step toward healing, and Sydney believes it is the essence of counseling.

Sydney received her master’s degree in Professional Counseling from Carlow University in 2018. She has worked in the human services field for over ten years and spent the majority of her career serving children and families who experienced various types of trauma. From her roles as an AmeriCorps KEYS volunteer, a behavioral specialist for IBHS, an adoption caseworker for Children and Youth Services, and a youth counselor at a domestic violence center, Sydney has a wide range of experience she draws on to better serve her clients. She has also worked with children from birth to age five at an early learning center where she helped create trauma-informed classrooms and provide training to staff about positive support strategies. Although birth to five is her favorite age to work with, as a neurodivergent person herself, Sydney also has a passion for advocating about issues affecting autistic and ADHD women and girls. She specializes in empowering clients to embrace the unique ways their brains work so they can live up to their full potential, whatever that means for them - not what others may have told them they should or could be. Sydney further enjoys helping LGBTQIA+ and polyamorous/ethically non-monogamous individuals and couples explore their identity and work on communication, intimacy, and healthy boundaries.

Sydney utilizes a variety of methods to provide a trauma-informed integrative approach that fits each client’s individual needs, such as animal assisted therapy, filial therapy, geek therapy, sandtray therapy, therapeutic drum circles, and expressive arts. In a typical session, you can expect to cry and laugh, and it’s always about process, never perfection. Change isn’t easy and doesn't happen overnight, but if any part of this speaks to you, then you are encouraged to reach out today to schedule an appointment. After all, “Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” – Brene Brown
