Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride month is currently celebrated throughout the month of June as a way to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Originally created as a day of remembrance at the end of June, it eventually morphed into a string of celebrations in various cities across the United States. Presently, we see Pride Month events that intend to promote a culture of acceptance and inclusivity, as well as events for causes that directly impact this community, such as memorials for those lost to HIV/AIDS or hate crimes.
Sexuality and gender identity, like many things, can be considered a spectrum. People do not always fall into one clear-cut category. Instead, sexuality and gender are constructs that may be fluid and may change over time as people explore their identities. The way that people express their sexuality or gender identity may differ from how we present our own; there are many different intersections of identities, and that is one of the beautiful things that makes us all unique.
The American Counseling Association (ACA) acknowledges the privilege it is to be a part of the work that the LGBTQ+ community does, and also notes some special areas in which community members may focus. Some presenting concerns that LGBTQ+ people may come to counseling for include identity exploration, navigating relationships with unsupportive families, or coping with harassment and discrimination. Additionally, studies show that LGBTQ+ people are more likely to experience mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. There are many reasons why members of this community or their loved ones would seek out counseling, and here at Favored Wellness, we are committed to providing support for everyone.
Resources for this community include the Trevor Project, which runs a hotline and chatline for LGBTQ+ young people in crisis (https://www.thetrevorproject.org/) and PFLAG, a national organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them (https://pflag.org/).
